James Ochse

James Ochse is a plant scientist, cultivation strategist, and graduate researcher whose work focuses on plant adaptation to environmental extremes. With more than two decades of experience spanning commercial agriculture, controlled environment horticulture, plant breeding, and hemp cultivation, he has worked across a wide range of production systems, from arid deserts and advanced greenhouse environments to tropical agricultural regions.

His graduate work explores the relationship between genetics, environment, and crop performance, with a particular focus on hemp. Areas of interest include cold tolerance, photoperiod response, environmental stress adaptation, plant secondary metabolites, and the development of resilient agricultural systems capable of performing under challenging conditions.

A developing focus of his research examines the potential for hemp adaptation in high-latitude environments, with Iceland serving as a unique natural laboratory. By studying how hemp responds to extended summer daylight, cool temperatures, and short growing seasons, he hopes to contribute to a broader understanding of genetic adaptation and the opportunities for hemp production in northern climates.

At the summit, James will share insights from his graduate work and discuss the potential role of Iceland in advancing our understanding of hemp genetics, environmental adaptation, and the future of cultivation in extreme environments. His broader interest is understanding how hemp and other crops adapt across diverse climates, from northern latitudes to deserts and tropical ecosystems, and applying those insights to the development of more resilient agricultural systems.
